On the origin of metastases from mesenchymal cells (macrophages).

Mitochondria are dynamic organelles that undergo regular fusion and fissions; thus abnormalities in mitochondrial lipid composition would be rapidly disseminated throughout the cell's mitochondrial network and could also be passed along to other cells through cytoplasmic inheritance during cellular fusion events.

Chronic inflammation increases fusion events.

The formation of cancer cell and macrophage fusion hybrids would result in the transfer of damaged mitochondria from the cancer cell to the macrophage hybrid daughter cell.
